Brahmans maintain dominance as Zimbabwe’s breed of choice

Zimbabwe's cattlemen continue to show their preference for Brahman cattle, as demonstrated at the 57th National Breed Sale that concluded in late July.
The numbers tell the story of the Brahman breed's enduring appeal: 27 Brahman bulls changed hands during the event, with the day's standout sale reaching USD 40,000. This top price was attained by Paul and Grant Pilossof of Ruvale Brahmans, whose bull (Lots 35) was purchased by Sifela Brahmans.
The Brahmans overall averaged an unbelievable USD 8,000.
The Matabeleland-based Pilossof family have been a fixture of the Zimbabwean stud breeding industry for several years.
The other breeds also fared well, notably Beefmasters, fetching the highest breed average of USD 12,000; this from three exceptional bulls, also bred by the Pilossof brothers.
A large yarding of 10 Tuli bulls sold very well, averaging USD 4,200.
The Dorper sheep also had a very good day and an excellent yarding was on offer, with the top priced ram fetching a record USD 4,300 price tag.
This annual event, organised by the Zimbabwe Herd Book (ZHB), showcases the finest pedigree animals our breeders have to offer and it draws serious cattle producers from across the country, whether they're looking to buy or sell quality livestock. The Herd Book and status of our stud industry remains firm and is currently represented by 223 breeders across 14 breeds (one sheep and 13 beef) with 24,738 registered animals.
Originally a traditional mid-year gathering, the sale has adapted to modern times by incorporating online bidding, a development spurred initially by the Covid pandemic and now sustained by improved technology access and strong interest from Zimbabwe's diaspora community.
The Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Hon. Davis Marapira, himself a keen livestock producer, officially opened the event after a tour to view the animals on offer.
